With world cup on the verge of starting, its quite a dare to release a movie in India irrespective of its genre. But what's bothering me is that it has been a disappointing experience for me three weeks in a row and "Tanu weds Manu" just adds up more to my recent sufferings.
An average plot with extremely poor and highly confused screenplay brings you to a blank state of mind by the time movie ends. Its about a boy who comes from "US" to marry a "kanpuriya" girl and falls in love without even talking to her. And from here starts a very predictable storyline with all the focus mostly on Kangana's character brushed up with some abusive words in the usual flow of dialogues so as to portray the so called real "UP". It doesn't work out too well though as Kangana, even after so much (visible) effort doesn't satisfy the character to the fullest.
The movie does catches some steam early on but looses it all by interval. The second half is just the usual, applying the "stretch the movie to its fullest" theory followed in Bollywood. Madhavan is good and played his part well, but it didn't matter much as the focus was never on him. Jimmy Shergill played the role of "Raja" quite well, but again if you have such a weak(read predictable) script and average direction, then such a tiny role doesn't help in uplifting the movie as a whole. Ravi Kishen was present in a forgettable and insensible inclusion of an extra character.
The only saving grace, or you may say, the most entertaining character was "Pappi" played by "Deepak Dobriyal" of 'Omkara', 'Delhi6' and 'Gulaal' fame. He was simply outstanding and had the best dialogues of the movie in his kitty. He definitely makes you laugh and enjoy the movie for a little while. But that's it, all the remaining side kicks played very insignificant roles. The sardar friend "Jassi" of Manu and his to be bihari bride "Payal" don't create any special impact on the storyline.
The most peppy and pumped up song doesn't even features in the movie making you wait for it till the end fruitlessly. Music overall isn't too praiseworthy as even 'Sadi Gali' has been modified from an original song by Lehmber Hussainpuri.
Overall, a pretty flat movie which shows some rays of hope during 1st half, but with no definitive tag of being a romantic or a comedy or a family drama, with almost nil on-screen chemistry and nothing as such to hold on the viewer after the interval. You may watch it when its telecasts on TV for Deepak Dobriyal's performance or may skip it altogether.
My Verdict: 5/10
