If there could have been a movie which could make people leave off their shyness and any feeling of being embarrassed on dancing and whistling in a multiplex in full flow, it had to be Yamla Pagla Deewana. I personally controlled a bit initially but then leaving off the hesitation, I was one among them who wanted just sheer fun and joy and no brains.
The first half disappoints greatly and leaves you wondering if it would improve any further hereon. The movie begins in a quite unique manner though, which do raise the hopes only to break them till the intermission. The pathetic songs and music only adds up to the pain and were more of a treat to the eyes than the ears. Exclusion of at least a couple of songs would have been more pleasing. Dialogues in first half lack the potential to allure the viewers too. An extensive amount of time was wasted in picturizing the Benaras part of the love story. The young bubbly actress, Kulraj Randhawa, who made her debut long back on the small screen was cute and adorable both in her desi and non desi version. This may turn out to be her entry into the mainstream commercial cinema.
The madness begins in the second half when the Deols enter their homeland punjab. From hereon its a non stop laugh riot, but only if you leave off your brains and apply the least logic you have. There were a couple of hiccups with some comic scenes falling flat but this neither impacts severely nor pulls down the entertainment level. Once Sahiba's (Kulraj Randhawa) sardar family led by versatile actor Anupam Kher, enters into the plot its a roller coaster ride with random twists and turns in a complete filmy "andaaz". Sucheta Khanna who plays the part of Sahiba's cousin, surprisingly turns out to be one of the most hilarious characters. Mukul Dev played his part well and delivered the best one liner of the movie.
Screenplay behaves like a sinusoidal curve. Choreography is average in most songs, apart from the title song where each Deol does what he is best at, forcing you to get into action. Be it Dharam paji's stereotype steps or Sunny's foot stomping steps from "mera dil le gayi oye kamo kidhar" and "yaara o yaara" (Jeet movie), the title song kind of takes you to the penultimate madness and excitement. The only thing you need is to let yourself loose and get into the flow. Director seems to have had just sit back on his chair and let the Deol's do whatever comes naturally to them with the plot and dialogues. This do makes it look bit lack lustrous at times but in a way brings out the real chemistry between the father and the sons. Even with all the inconsistency you end up smiling and laughing and that's what counts.
Dharmendra may have lost his screen presence power and all his youth but hasn't lost a bit of his charm. It still lightens up your face when he delivers a dialogue or enacts a comic scene. He may no more be perfect but even this imperfectness along with the loyalty adds to the aura of his glorious bollywood career. Sunny does all the fight sequences as is expected from him. They are definitely out of the world and larger than life, but isn't it what we expect from him. Plus being a masala hindi flick, such action sequences are intentional and fit in perfectly with Sunny's character. Bobby has played his part as loyally as he could and is given the part which suits him the best. None of the Deol's have been spared from being mocked with Sunny's affinity for hand pumps being the best of them.
Overall a paisa vasool "mast" timepass movie which surely lightens up your mood. For deol family fans though, its much more than that. For non Sunny/Deol lovers, i would still say go at your own risk, as i feel they may or maynot be able to develop the required mindset to enjoy this celebration of the Deol's.
My verdict: Total Entertainer, 7/10
